Art of Recruiting ImageImagine if the masters of your profession could come together in one room. Think about what you’d learn and the ideas that would be shared.

That’s exactly what Shannon Sanderson, a senior creative recruiter at Digital People, got to experience recently. She was hand selected to join 19 other industry-leading recruiters from across the country to be filmed during a candid Q&A session about the recruiting profession. The panel of experts discussed the profession, how it’s changed over the years, and what it takes to achieve success.

“Sitting in a room filled with my colleagues from across the country was exciting and inspiring. I was so honored to participate and enjoyed joining in the conversation to share my experience and insight,” says Shannon. “I think we all walked away from the experience feeling empowered and motivated to continue to do the very best work for talent and clients.”

The conversations were included in Art of Recruiting, a docufilm by Lavoie Films. Here are a few of our key takeaways from the film:

  1. Recruiting is an art and a science. While understanding technology and analytics helps recruiters gain an edge, knowing how to listen, build relationships, and be a matchmaker for clients and talent is an art.
  1. The art of recruiting is evolving. In the 90’s, it was all about “access.” Recruiters had access to databases that employers didn’t have. In the 2000’s it was about “efficiency” and using technology to streamline the process. Today, it’s about “insight.” Employers have access to the same databases as recruiters. Recruiters need to use their expertise and intuition to guide employers to the right hiring decision in today’s fast-paced, talent-driven market.
  1. Always be hiring. Even when you don’t have an open position to fill, maintain the “hiring mindset.” Conversations are like interviews in many ways. Get to know people and ask lot of questions so that when a position becomes available, relationships are already formed and, in many ways, the interview has already taken place.
  1. Recruiting is sales. And that’s a good thing. The best sales people have perfected the art of building relationships. To be successful in sales, you need to care, uncover needs, and present solutions. It’s also important to teach your candidates how to sell themselves and close for the offer.
  2. Use technology wisely. Consider your audience when determining what mode of communication to use. Older generations typically appreciate a phone call while younger generations prefer a text. You need to adapt. A recruiter’s primary goal continues to be a voice-to-voice (or better yet, a face-to-face) conversation.
