It’s become increasingly important to have a social presence these days. If you’re not on social networking sites, you’re not as connected to other professionals in your industry. And because the old “it’s-who-you-know” adage is still true, you could be missing out on an opportunity.
A recent survey found that 73% of recruiters have filled positions through social media. Of these recruiters, 79% hired from LinkedIn. Update your LinkedIn profile to include keywords related to in-demand skills, qualifications, and accomplishments. If you’re unsure of what employers are looking for, look at job descriptions and review other profiles of professionals in your industry.
Update your resume
Take some time to add your recent work history to your resume. Be concise and specific. Metrics are an effective way to attract attention and add credibility – numbers talk! Include as many facts and figures as possible: the size of the teams you’ve led, amount of money you saved, percent increase in profitability, etc. If you don’t have metrics available, highlight your accomplishments (i.e. improved office efficiency, streamlined processes, consistently met deadlines, etc.).
Establish your elevator pitch
You never know when you’ll run into someone with connections to a potential job. You have less than a minute to sell yourself and pique their interest. Be prepared with a 15- to 30-second elevator pitch that highlights your skill sets and career goals. Practice, practice, practice your pitch until it’s as effortless as saying your name.
It takes work to find work – and the work begins long before you send your resume to a potential employer. Follow these tips and you’ll be well on your way to securing your dream job!
